Universal Law Series – Hermetic Principle of Rhythm

Principle of Rhythm

“Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum – swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.” The Kybalion

You are going to love working with this principle. Allow me to set the stage for you. The house lights go down, into the spotlight steps Gloria Estefan singing, “the rhythm is gonna get’cha, the rhythm is gonna get’cha”. And she’s right – your foot begins to tap, your shoulders sway, perhaps you even join her in the chorus. Your earlier concerns of the day fade, you are basking in the music, the atmosphere, the moment. That is the power of the Principle of Rhythm.

Rhythm is everywhere

Rhythm is in everything. You can see it in seasons – from summer to winter, with autumn and spring in between. You can see it day and night as the sun rises and sets, in the phases of the moon, the ebb, and the flow of the tides. In our own lives – our heartbeat, our breath – breathing in and out, in life and death, and our highs and lows. Gloria Estefan was right – there’s no escaping rhythm – it is in everything and everywhere including you.

All of life has a rhythm. Understanding this rhythm in action, we begin to see that there is truly nothing to fear. All will be restored.

This Principle of Rhythm explains why and how change happens, the movement and direction in the universe. This movement The Kybalion calls rhythm balances the changes between the opposites (polarity) – creating the harmony of both poles.

This principle of change states – this rhythm, is not random, it is equal and measurable. Movement to one pole is equal to the movement on the other side, whether it is physical, spiritual or mental. Because of this measurable movement, we are able to predict changes and direct our awareness of it as well.

So why is this important?

Because this principle shows us change is inevitable. Knowing nothing is permanent, we can move through challenging times, even if it requires us to chant or scream, “this too shall pass!” Trust me it will. The Principle of Rhythm declares it. We have Newton’s third law of motion to back it up, “For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction.”

Most of humanity lives on an emotional rollercoaster and given the ever changing status of our world it is no wonder there is a higher rate of anxiety and stress. This principle gives us access to keeping our cool.

It allows you to give up your attachment to life needing to be a ‘certain’ way – and instead helps you enjoy every moment, no matter what it brings you.

How to apply the Hermetic Principle of Rhythm:

Rhythm may be neutralized by an application of the Art of Polarization.” – The Kybalion

As you get deeper into working with this principle, you’ll be able to work with your own energy and emotions, especially when you are feeling the highs and lows of life. You learn to use the Art of Polarization to adjust your rhythm. What does that mean exactly? Imagine you are having a day that is vacillating between yay and boo. By focusing on your rhythm of yay and then knowing there will be a natural swing towards the opposite (boo), then using the Art of Polarization you use detachment and focus (on yay) to neutralize the swing that would normally take you to boo.

In writing our book, You Don’t Look Psychic, Your Essential Guide To Tapping Into Your Natural Powers, we have multiple processes that work with the Hermetic Principle of Rhythm. One of my favorites is a creation by my co-author, Dr. Divi, Belly Breathing. We are including an excerpt from our book below if you’re interested in trying it out. Other exercises that utilize this principle are breathwork, sound healing, energy healing, pivoting and so many more.

For me applying this principle gives me the encouragement to not give up when things feel bumpy. Knowing there is time for everything, and there will be rises and falls, flows in and out. Instead of this being an obstacle, understanding this principle allows us to use the rhythm of change to succeed.

As you can see, the Universe through these principles put you in the director’s chair of your life. You call the shots!

Meditation and Writing Prompts:

Hermetic Principle of Rhythm guides us to acknowledge that everything has a rhythm, nothing is permanent. Here are some questions to support your journaling and meditation practices.

How do I embrace change in my life?

Does my happiness shift with my circumstances?

If so, how can I maintain my rhythm?

How do I expand the good things and feelings in my life?

Belly Breathing Meditation

*Excerpt from YDLP

Close your eyes and center your breath.

Start to slowly breathe in and out.

In and out.

In and out.

Relaxed, slow calm and easy breathing.

With each breath, start to follow the pattern and rhythm of your breath.

Place your right hand on your abdomen and your left hand on your chest.

Notice which hand is moving more.

With each breath, start to focus on your right hand so that your right hand slowly lifts and falls. With each breath, your right hand rises and falls with ease.

Slow breaths in, deep breaths out.

Empty your lungs and begin to inhale for the count of 1-2-3 and exhale for 1-2-3-4 (Repeat)

Slow breaths in – deep breaths out.

With the rhythm of your breath, focus on your right had lifting and falling with your mind focusing on your breath.

Calm, relaxed, slow, and easy breathing.

If thoughts are coming, which is normal, imagine you are looking at a blue sky with clouds drifting by. Each thought is a cloud which with each breath starts to be blown away, returning to your slow deep breath.

Allow your thoughts to come and go, don’t push them away, just notice them, watch with each breath as they get further and further away from you – returning to blue skies.

Your belly breathing pattern is becoming easier more relaxed.

You feel calmer, lighter.

Your parasympathetic nervous system is being stimulated, calming and relaxing you more and more. Bringing you into the now.

For the last few breaths, make them longer, slower, deeper and fuller.

Your mind is a bit quieter, your heart fuller, the rhythms of your deep breaths have you feel more refreshed.

Bring your awareness to your fingers and toes. And when you are ready, gently open your eyes returning to a bright world.
